While many aspects of national copyright laws have been standardized through international copyright agreements, copyright laws vary by country.  Typically, the duration of a copyright spans the author's life plus 50 to years (that is, copyright typically expires 50 to years after the author dies, depending on the jurisdiction). In the United States, trade secret law is primarily handled at the state level under the Uniform Trade Secrets Act, which most states have adopted, and a federal law, the Economic Espionage Act of (18 U.S.C. §§ –), which makes the theft or misappropriation of a trade secret a federal crime.
